Earth Day is a solid tradition at EMO. Every year in April, EMO and the Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center partner up to host a (mostly) outdoor event and gathering, crafts market, and a roadside trash pick-up event. Participants clean up target areas on the Reservation in groups, families, or solo, contributing to a waste stream sorting and weighing effort with EMO staff, and receive breakfast and raffle tickets for their efforts.
The event includes arts and crafts, kids games and activities, games such as Chuptuhii, live music, demos and information from our Earth Day partner booths, a raffle, and of course food and refreshments.
Participants have included: Tribal Council and Miss Bishop Paiute, BPT Public Works, Community Development Department, Elders Program, KBPT Radio, the Harry Andreas Band, the Other Guys band, Fort Independence Environmental Office, Toiyabe Indian Health Project, Inyo County, Wildcare Eastern Sierra, Bishop Climbing Rangers, Bishop Area Climbers Coalition, Bureau of Land Management, Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association, Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District, High Point Solar, Sierra Solar, Southern California Edison, GRID Alternatives, the Office of Indian Energy, Eastern Sierra Conservation Corps, Leave No Trace Center, and many vendors offering traditional and artisinal food and crafts. The BPT Maintenance staff helps get the event prepared.
Thank you to everyone who participates in Earth Day activities with the Bishop Paiute Tribe.
